Pioneer Works & Ace Hotel Brooklyn present: Crit Night

  • 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm | Monday January 17, 2022
  • Atrium | Ace Hotel Brooklyn
  • 252 Schermerhorn St.

Ace Hotel Brooklyn and Pioneer Works join in creative arms to foster artistic communities.

Crit Night is a seasonal series, where Pioneer Works artists-in-residence share works in progress during an intimate evening focused around experimentation and discourse.

Tech Resident Carrie Wang will present a live performance piece featuring a monologue that switches between Chinese and English, a computer system made with speech-to-text API and google translate, and a printer. As the artist reveals her unfiltered stream of thoughts, the computer system simultaneously translates the personal narrative into the other language using a synthesized voice. The printer prints out the computer’s translation for the artist to read, which will be translated again by the computer. Titled “Lost and Found,” the piece explores the lost and the found of meanings through layers of technological mediation.

Visual Arts Resident Asuka Goto will read excerpts from a personal essay that she’s written about the process of trying to translate one of her father’s novels from Japanese to English.

Music Resident Tony Cruise demonstrates a batch of handmade electronic instruments in a performance of selected scenes from the modular opera, ‘Smellin of Thunderbird & Bodies in Heat.’
