DESCRIPTION:From Saturday\, February 1\, a solo exhibition titled “follage” by Hawaii-based artist Kristin Baucom will be held at the Lobby Gallery on the first floor. \nThe exhibition title follage is a coined word combining “forage\,” “foliage\,” and “collage.” In this exhibition\, Kristin\, who redefines the possibilities of natural dyes\, presents works centered on the themes of upcycling and sustainability\, using locally sourced natural materials as well as food scraps that would otherwise be discarded. \nDuring the exhibition period\, dyeing workshops will also be held\, utilizing materials such as used coffee grounds and vegetable peels collected from the hotel’s restaurants and cafés. \n  \nReception Party  \nFebruary 2\, 6:00PM – 8:00PM \n  \nKristin Baucom \nKristin Baucom is a Honolulu-based artist redefining the possibilities of natural dye through a fresh\, contemporary approach. He later studied Illustration at ArtCenter College of Design.\nWhile in school\, he worked as an assistant to artists such as Jim Shaw and Cleon Peterson\, developing a particularly close relationship with Jim Shaw.\nSince his student years\, Ishida has collaborated with numerous brands including Target\, Huf Worldwide\, Converse\, Nozbone Skateshop\, and Giant Robot. DESCRIPTION:An improvisational ambient live performance featuring readings from a book written in Kyoto — a soundscape shaped by layers of memory and sound. \n京都で書かれた本の朗読をフィーチャーした、即興アンビエントのライブパフォーマンス。記憶と音が幾重にも重なり合い、音の風景を紡ぎ出す。 \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLe Son Du Couple \n‘Le son du couple <The sound of couple in French>’ is an art project by director Huh Namhoon\, and writer Moa Kim\, who breaks down the boundaries between travel and life and creates books\, music\, and films with inspiration from those moments. It’s based on travel and life. \nIt is a project that is close to a kind of evocation\, in which director Huh Namhoon\, and writer Moa Kim\, present the stories we want to tell ourselves and the world. We wanted to shout and communicate with the cultural results that we can\, so we replaced <man and woman> with a couple\, and <story> is the sound we want to make in the end\, so we replaced it with ‘sound’ and <The sound of couple> in French\, ‘le son du couple’. I named it. The reason I chose French is because if I could choose it if I were born again\, it would be France. Since we were children\, we immersed French films\, music\, literature\, and art and have been greatly influenced by them. We can’t choose the country\, time\, method\, or parents in which we are born. So that was the answer to the question we asked. “If you were to be born again\, where would you want to be?” \nLike this\, every project starts with a question. \n  \n‘Le son du couple’ is an attempt to ask better questions in life\, an effort and question to live independently. An attempt to put ‘why’ in front of obvious things and ask ourselves. While we were asking each other the essential question\, ‘How do we want to live?’\, we decided to live life like a travel and travel like life. \n‘Le son du couple’ is the life we want to live and travel for a certain period of time. Life and travel have an end\, but because life has no end in sight\, everyone forgets that there is an end. But since the journey has an end in sight\, everyone works hard to fill every moment of every day. Record it in writing\, photos\, music\, and video\, show it to the world\, and hold an exhibition. \n_ \nWe write\, film\, and collect sound every day as we travel and attempt to live our lives. After the time of endless attempts\, it becomes books\, music\, and videos. \nSince 2013\, we have published 7 books\, 1 LP\, and produced several films. We are making a record of the 40 days spent in Kyoto from 2023 to early winter of 2024 through books and music.  \n  \n『ル・ソン・デュ・クプル（Le son du couple）』は、クリエイティブ・ディレクター ホ・ナムフンと作家 モア・キムによるアートプロジェクト。旅と生活の境界を越え、その瞬間から得たインスピレーションをもとに、本、音楽、映像作品を横断的に制作している。 \n本プロジェクトは、「もし生まれ変わるならどこで生きたいか」という問いから始まった。幼い頃からフランスの映画、音楽、文学、美術に影響を受けてきた二人は、その憧れを込め、〈カップルの音〉を意味するフランス語「Le son du couple」と名付けた。〈男と女〉を〈カップル〉へ、〈物語〉を最終的に生み出したい〈音〉へと置き換え、表現の核としている。 \nすべてのプロジェクトは問いから始まる。「私たちはどのように生きたいのか」という本質的な問いに向き合いながら、「人生を旅のように、旅を人生のように生きる」ことを実践している。日々の中で〈なぜ〉を問い直し、書くこと、撮ること、音を集めることを通して、自らの生を記録し続けている。 \n人生には終わりが見えにくい一方で、旅には終わりがある。だからこそ一瞬一瞬を丁寧に捉え、文章、写真、音楽、映像として記録し、作品として発表している。 \n2013年より活動を開始し、これまでに書籍7冊、LP1作品を発表、複数の映像作品を制作。現在は、2023年から2024年初冬にかけて京都で過ごした40日間の記録を、本と音楽として制作している。 \n

DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce the gallery exhibition by our latest Artist in Residence\, Satoko Imazu. “Echoes” will be on view May 1 through July 31. \nDuring her time with us\, Satoko chose the Kyoto Imperial Palace as the central theme of her work — a place deeply rooted in history\, yet very much a part of everyday life for Kyoto’s residents. She was drawn to how different it feels from the Imperial Palace and gardens in Tokyo\, where she usually lives. In Kyoto\, people cycle through the grounds as part of their daily commute\, run as part of their routine\, take walks\, rest and\, on weekends\, gather for baseball games or tennis practice. In some ways\, it felt reminiscent of Central Park to her. \nIncluding the changing scenes along the way during her daily visits to the grounds\, She photographed with a focus on “everyday life\,” a central theme in her ongoing work. \nReception Party: May 1\, 18:30–20:30 (in front of the Gallery)\nSlow Series Photo Workshop: May 2\, from 10:30 (meet in the Lobby) \nFree and open to all. \nSatoko Imazu\nAfter apprenticing under photographer Shingo Wakagi\, Satoko Imazu established her independent practice in 2004. Based in Shizuoka\, Japan\, her sets are a deep dive into Amapiano and Gqom\, seamlessly weaving together diverse African beats to create a cohesive and immersive experience on the dancefloor. In 2023\, she performed at the Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda. Through the 1980s\, he learned by watching DJs at Nishiazabu Tommy’s\, while the artists at Harajuku Monkberry’s left a lasting impact—shaping his taste across reggae\, dub\, and rock. At Club D\, he trained under Toru Takahashi\, often playing marathon solo sets from 5pm through to 6am\, usually high-energy throughout. \nHe became known for his unconventional approach\, building sets that started at BPM 85\, rose to 135\, and returned again—something few DJs would attempt today. Time spent in Kyoto and Osaka further grounded him in the traditions of disco culture. He later founded the legendary Kyoto club GARDEN\, a mysterious spot frequented incognito by figures like Eikichi Yazawa and Ryuichi Sakamoto. \nToday\, alongside his work as an ALS care helper and music selector for Butoh\, TETSU SHIRAISHI continues to DJ with a singular\, genre-defying style.
