Introduction to Screen Printing with Makers Market
- 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm | Sunday January 23, 2022
- | Ace Hotel Brooklyn
Join textile designer, and TAC studio member, Olga Joan (Markers Market) to learn more about her design work and practice, including demonstrations of screenprinting yardage and hands-on experimentation.
Olga Joan is the owner, designer and maker behind MAKERSMARKET, a Brooklyn based modern handcrafted home goods brand with a focus on beautifully crafted textiles. Olga is originally from Scotland to a Catalan family but spent most of her adult life in the United States. She left the fashion and apparel industry after over two decades, seeking to have a more fulfilling purpose yet still be creative. It took one screen printing class at the Textile Arts Center 5 years ago and Olga was immediately hooked. Despite it being a great learning curve she was up for the challenge. “There are so many components to screen printing, from creating the art, all the nuances of getting your screen ready, to the physical act of printing and creating fabrics that turn into thoughtful, long lasting and functional pieces for every home. To see the appreciation and acceptance of my work from customers and clients, gives me such joy, and confirms this endeavor of this brand that I’ve spent the last few years working so hard at.”
*Proof of vaccination is mandatory for attendance.
This workshop is part of the Textile Arts Center residency at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn during December and January. The Textile Arts Center at Ace Hotel Brooklyn re(creates) some of the studio facilities of TAC’s studio in Gowanus to provide an inside look into a textile arts studio and a space for learning and experimentation with textile techniques, including demonstrations of weaving, machine knitting and printing. Three artists from the Textile Arts Center’s community will be showcasing their work and practice, and activating the space through demos and workshops: Elaine Shen , Jose Picayo and Olga Joan.
The Textile Arts Center (TAC) was founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, as a resource facility dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for youth and adults. At TAC, we aspire to unite the textile community and advocate for the handmade by providing accessible, skills-based classes that reinvigorate engagement with traditional crafts, artist residencies and access to shared textile equipment and facilities.
