About
Stones Throw
Stones Throw Records is an independent record label based in Los Angeles, CA. The label was founded in 1996 by DJ and artist Peanut Butter Wolf, originally as a means to release Bay Area hip-hop and the music he made with his best friend, the rapper Charizma, who was tragically killed at age 20.
Stones Throw’s early releases included hip-hop classics by the likes of Madlib, J Dilla, Madvillain and Quasimoto, later joined by records by Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe Blacc and Dam-Funk that redefined modern funk and soul. Since then, the label has gone on to transcend genres and expectations. Referred to by the LA Weekly as “Peanut Butter Wolf’s eternally evolving experiment . . . Stones Throw is just Stones Throw, a genre unto itself”
Today, the label’s hip-hop roots live on in through artists like Knxwledge, Mndsgn, Kiefer and NxWorries (Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge) and are joined by artists as varied as Sudan Archives, John Carroll Kirby, Automatic and Mild High Club.
Mndsgn
Mndsgn, aka Ringgo Ancheta, was born in San Diego, raised in the southern region of New Jersey, and is currently based in Los Angeles. The youngest in a family of Filipino descent, Ringgo grew up in a household where the love and appreciation for music was always synonymous. Ringgo has aimed to explore the human condition in his music. Taken as a whole, his body of work chronicles the evolution of self, asking throughout: how can we live in a way that is true to ourselves? How can we find beauty in the everyday and unfamiliar?
Devin Morrison
Florida-born, Devin Morrison is a classically-trained composer, producer and recording artist. Much of his catalog can be best described as ‘Dreamsoul’ — a musical mélange inspired by his dreams, surrealism and nostalgia. His professional career started in Tokyo where he collaborated with various underground artists. After suddenly having to move out of Japan, he moved to Los Angeles where he released his debut album, ‘Bussin’ on NBN Records, album critically acclaimed and deemed as a ‘classic’.
The Dreamsoul sound echoes the stylings of legends like Stevie Wonder, Commissioned & Ryuichi Sakamoto. He has worked with artists such as Masego, VanJess, We Are KING, Crush, Phonte, Mndsgn & Joyce Wrice, just to name a few. Morrison currently resides in Los Angeles, California where he is working on his next sophomore album.
Gabriel da Rosa
Growing up in rural southern Brazil with a radio DJ for a father, Gabriel was exposed to all kinds of music from his home country, but it wasn’t until he moved to L.A. that he began curating Brazilian records and DJing himself. In L.A. he bonded with Stones Throw’s founder, artist and DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, over their shared love of Brazilian music, and began writing his own bossa nova. He recently released his debut album on Stones Throw, É o que a casa oferece, which pays tribute to the greats of samba and bossa nova, with a modern edge. Sung in Portuguese, the autobiographical lyrics explore Gabriel’s rural childhood, his adventures traveling around the world, and the stories he’s picked up along the way.
